Meet Your Guide

Hello, I'm Marq Mervin (he/him).

I work with Black creative professionals who have done “everything right”, built a remarkable life and/or career, but whisper to themselves, “I’m successful...but why do I still feel unhappy?”

Throughout my life and career, I’ve learned that the higher a person climbs, the more lonely it becomes. Achievement isn’t as fulfilling and they lose themselves along the way. The résumé is impressive, the network is vast, and the accolades were earned. But, they’ve never felt more alone.

I’ve been there, so I understand. That’s why I walk beside you along this journey and co-create your next chapter with you.

A Little More About Me

I move through the world in a few interconnected ways:

  • As a Guide, I offer support through identity plateaus and transitions to help create a path that aligns with who you’re becoming.

  • As an Artist, my practice is multidisciplinary and expansive. Creation isn’t something I teach from theory. It’s how I live.

  • As an Educator, I've spent nearly a decade as a professor specializing in career preparation, creative entrepreneurship, and building bridges between academia and creative industries.

If credentials help you feel assured, you’re welcome to explore my Portfolio or LinkedIn. If story matters more, keep reading.

From industry to academia.

In March 2016, I was let go from my job just before flying to Atlanta for a gaming tournament. When the weekend ended, I returned home unemployed, laid on my bed, and said to myself, “I need to figure this out”.

Soon after, I met with a new client who needed design work for her book launch. At the end of our conversation, she asked a question that quietly shifted everything:

“So, Marq…what else do you want to do in life?”

I told her I wanted to become a professor and give a TED talk. She smiled and said, “Why don’t you apply for it? Here, I'll send you the link.”

In October 2016, I gave my TEDx talk on a Saturday morning. Afterwards, a man named Jeff pulled me aside, commended my talk, and asked if I ever considered teaching. I nearly talked myself out of the opportunity, but he handed me his card and said “Whenever you’re ready, give me a call.”

He was the Dean of Communications.

The following Tuesday, he invited me to an interview and I accepted the offer. In January 2017, I started my journey as a professor.

That was the remarkable conversation that changed my life. Little did I know, it wouldn’t be the last.

I became what I didn’t have.

The professor who talked the talk and walked the walk. What I taught came from what I practiced. I brought "the real world" to the classroom because I created in that world. I was built different.

For nearly a decade, I gave myself fully to education. I was often the first—and sometimes only—professor who looked like the students I taught. I worked relentlessly, earned recognition, and lived my dream.

After a while, something felt…off. I loved the classroom, but deep down, I knew there was more to imagine. More to create. More to become.

Over time, the truth revealed itself:

  • I felt unfulfilled, even in success.

  • I didn't share my obstacles because everyone thought I was "living the life".

  • I felt misunderstood…and, strangely, alone.

  • I lacked clarity for the first time in my life.

  • I plateaued, with no clear way forward.

I found myself lost in The Gray. Endless self-doubt with no clear direction forward. Then, a familiar question returned. This time, in conversation with myself and God:

“So, Marq, what else do you want to do in life?”

My answer shook me.

“…I don’t know”.

The heart of the matter.

I was standing at the summit of my teaching career and felt completely directionless. For the first time, I was a blank slate. A canvas untouched. Completely shrouded in The Gray.

I knew I wanted to serve beyond the classroom. I also wanted to create impact at a deeper scale. But I didn't know what that looked like or if it was even possible.

So, I stayed curious.

I asked different and better questions. Gathered new skills. Explored new environments. Followed threads that didn’t make sense yet.

Slowly, things began to alchemize:

  • I remembered that this is my adventure to live.

  • Education was a chapter, not the whole story.

  • Curiosity became my compass.

  • Bigger, bolder ideas required more courage.

  • It was time to dream remarkably.

  • I needed to make magic again.

I committed to my own transformation through intensive coaching and personal development. I learned from guides who were aligned with my vision. I climbed mountains I once thought insurmountable. And through those remarkable experiences, I became the most authentic version of myself.

Now, I help others do the same. Not by giving them a map, but by helping them remember how to navigate their own.

If you’re standing at a plateau or if something in you knows there’s more—

Let’s get to the heart of the matter.
